(1) Select the appropriate graphite electrode grade and diameter according to the capacity of EAF and transformer. 

(2) Avoid damaging and moistening during the process of loading, unloading and storage. Wetted electrodes should be dried. When lifting, needs to protect the electrode connector hole and the connector thread. 

(3) When connecting the electrode, use compressed air to blow off the dust in the connector hole. When the holder is holding the electrode, be sure to avoid the connector area. 

(4) The melting period is the most prone to break the electrode, so the operator should be carefully observed, timely lift the electrode. 

(5) In the refining period, if carbon is added by the graphite electrode, the electrode immersed in the molten steel becomes thinner quickly and breaks easily or causes the joint to fall, resulting in increased electrode consumption. Therefore, by other means to increase carbon as far as possible.

Introduction of magnesia-calcium bricks

The magnesia-calcium brick, also known as high calcium magnesite brick, is a kind of magnesial refractory material with periclase as principal crystalline phase and tricalcium silicate as secondary phase. It contains 80 % ~ 87% MgO, 6 % ~ 9% CaO, CaO/SiO2 ratio is between 2.2 ~ 3.0. Its significant structural feature is periclase directly contact with dicalcium silicate and tricalcium silicate, making eutectic solution-4 Cao-Al2O3-Fe2O3 fill into crystal gap between dicalcium silicate and tricalcium silicate. Its porosity is low, the refractoriness under load is higher than 1700 ℃. It has good alkaline slag resistance ability, but with poor thermal shock resistance. Made by calcium magnesia sand as refractory raw material, it will be made by firing at 1550~1600 ℃ after crushing, burdening, mixing and molding. It will be used at eye place of side-blown converter, top place of open-hearth furnace and oxygen-blown converter etc.

Matters need attention in designing ladle cover

1. There are normally two kinds of ladle cover, water-cooling cover and refractory material cover. Compared with refractory material cover, water-cooling cover is with much less maintenance work. However, water-cooling cover is with more energy loss, especially for small ladle. It is reported that, for a 300t ladle, the energy loss with water-cooling cover is 12-14%, while as high as 41% for a 40t ladle. Thus energy loss and maintenance should both be put into consideration during designing.
2. To ensure good inner environment in ladle, reduce oxidization of electrodes and slag, reduce molten steel absorbing hydrogen and nitrogen from the air, it’s better to keep a mirco positive pressure status.
3. Deploy a hood on ladle cover and a tube by the side of the hood, or deploy several vacuuming holes under the ladle cover, then connect them to the tube, set a regulating valve plate to form the second vacuuming point in the ladle.

The reason and trend of graphite electrode price increase

At the beginning of 2017 , the average price of 500mm per ton of graphite electrode was only RMB 129,000 / ton , more than ten times higher . Analysts pointed out that the tide was far from over . The two characteristics of HP graphite electrode have been determined , and the price increase basically will be continued .

1. Supply end : long production cycle
The production cycle of graphite electrode needs to be three months and can not stop in the middle . The current heating season has a significant impact on graphite electrode enterprises . In December , many carbon factories in Hebei province have stopped production and limited production and lost a lot of capacity . At present , most of the graphite electrode manufacturers in Henan and Hebei are still in the shutdown state . According to the agency , capacity expansion is expected to be difficult before the end of the heating season on March 15 next year ; New capacity is expected to increase capacity of more than 100,000 tons of graphite electrode in June next year . Therefore , the short - term view of graphite electrodes will have a greater chance of maintaining the market in the first half .

2.Demand end: the development of electric furnace steel is the trend of the times.
Electric furnace steel is a big consumer of HP graphite electrode consumption, and the 70% demand of graphite electrode comes from electric furnace steel. And the fastest way to expand capacity is on the furnace steel making.
On the other hand, the state also expressed support for the development of electric furnace steel industry.
